Great 70s Punk – 12: The Jam

Oh fuck. Here goes my credibility down the tube…

I have to include this, if only cos I can recall hearing this song while working on the production line at Cundell’s Corrugated Cardboard factory in Chelmsford, and having tears of rage run down my face as Weller sang the line, “Tears of rage run down your face/And yet still you say it’s fun”. A living cliche, that was me. To this day, I still can’t believe I never saw them play live (it was probably to do with my immediate distrust of large gigs).

My distaste for Weller’s solo work (and his subsequent distaste for me) has been documented elsewhere. I do recall writing the lines “I grew a beard during that last guitar solo” about one of his festival shows, and being interviewed for a Weller documentary – segment subsequently not used – because I gave his comeback single a two-word review.

“You swear you’ll never ever work for someone…”!!! Ha. Chance would be a fine thing.

“No corporations for the new age sons…” You bastard, Weller. I took these lines at face value.
